Digital Hearing Care attended the Hearbuy hearing aid industry conference mid September, lots of new things to tell you about. We will post in more detail about individual manufacturers and their recent offerings fairly shortly but here's a run down of what's in store;

Phonak Hearing Aids - Phonak have a big launch planned for October, they are keeping things under wraps but Digital Hearing Care have been informed it's going to be a big event, maybe a new raft of technology being launched?

Oticon Hearing Aids - Oticon have a launch later this month towards the end of September for a mid range product, all indications are it will be a mid range offering based on the very successful Rise 2 chip and the Oticon Agil / Agil Pro.

Widex Hearing Aids - Widex are very excited to launch their new wireless products, the new wireless accessories will be available alongside the new Widex Clear 440 which will be available later this month.

Unitron Hearing Aids - Unitron are pretty excited about their new Unitron Tandem CROS / BiCros product, they tell me it is literally flying off the shelves! For a niche product it seems to have caught people's imaginations! Our head hearing aid audiologist Paul Minikin is trying out a Unitron Tandem on his mother in the next few days and will be very interetsed to see how she hets on with the device....

GN ReSound Hearing Aids - GN ReSound launched their new ReSound Alera product just before the conferenece, initially as a RIC product with some really interesting new wireless accessories, their ideas certainly seem to be pushing the technology in the right direction.

Bernafon Hearing Aids - Bernafon added an entry level version of their patented 'Channelfree' technology to their range of hearing aids. The new Bernafon Inizia complements the existing range of Bernafon Veras and Bernafon Verite.

Of course Siemens Hearing Aids and Starkey Hearing Aids have recently brought new offerings to the fore, Siemens with the launch mid year with their full upgrade of the Siemens Pure, Life and Motion range of hearing aids, Starkey with the IQ upgrade to their successful Starkey 'S' Series and the ground breaking Starkey OtoLens.

We will post in more detail individually about all these exciting new products over the next few days or so, we hope we've whetted your appetite in the meantime!

The Siemens Hearing Aids ePen Remote Control for hearing instruments has been given an international red dot award for outstanding product design.

It can adjust the volume and programs of hearing instruments. The ePen from Siemens Hearing Aids is shaped like a fountain pen and was judged on degree of innovation, functionality and symbolic standing, fending off thousands of entries.

The ePen allows users to adjust the volume and programs of their hearing instruments by twisting the bottom of the ePen, or pressing the relevant buttons in the hiden control section. You can also turn the hearing instruments on and off using this innovative remote control.

Its subtle approach and discreet design impressed a panel of experts who judged products on criteria such as emotional content and self-explanatory qualities.

This year’s awards saw more than 4000 entries and 1600 participants from 57 countries. The red dot accolade was presented to Siemens at a gala event in Essen, Germany on the 5th July and is the ePen’s second award for outstanding design as it also received the 2010 Product Design Award.

Trevor Andrews, Managing Director of Siemens Hearing Aids in the UK said, “We are delighted to receive this international award. It is a clear recognition of our commitment to deliver innovations that make a real difference to the daily life of the hearing impaired.”

The ePen works with Siemens Pure, Life , Motion and Nitro SP BTE hearing aids. The Siemens hearing aids range offers optimal care for almost every type of hearing impairment, matching individual lifestyles to instrument functionality.

Rebranding of hearing aids makes price comparions difficult - Fact. It makes it harder for you the consumer  to make informed decisions about where to purchase hearing aids. Some would question why large national companies would be motivated to do this. Companies involved in rebranding of hearing aids include Hidden Hearing, Amplifon and Specsavers.

The whole point of the internet in the perspective of research into purchasing hearing aids is that it is a great leveller. You should be able to compare prices easily between local, national and international suppliers and make your decisions to purchase (or at least be able to make an informed decision about who you want to initially approach), based on the prices you see (like for like) and get a real feel of the organisation you will be dealing with.

With this in mind, if you are ever recommended Oticon Hearing Aids supplied by Hidden Hearing and it has one of the following codes, here is a handy guide to help you compare absolutely like with like. I warn you, you may be shocked at the difference in prices quoted by some of the nationals compared to our own very reasonable hearing aid prices!

Oticon Agil Pro - Hidden Hearing K220

Oticon Agil - Hidden Hearing K210

Oticon Vigo Pro Connect - Hidden Hearing M120C

Oticon Vigo Connect - Hidden Hearing M100C

Oticon Hit Pro - Hidden Hearing M80

Oticon Hit - Hidden Hearing M60

Oticon Dual XW - Hidden Hearing Plus M480

Oticon Dual W - Hidden Hearing Plus M460

Oticon Dual V - Hidden Hearing Plus M440

Oticon Dual M9 - Hidden Hearing Plus 9k

Oticon Dual M7 - Hidden Hearing Plus 7k

Oticon Dual M5 / Pro - Hidden Hearing Plus 5k / Plus M320

Oticon Sumo DM - Hidden Hearing HH3000

The list is not exhaustive, if you need any clarification on any hearing aid prices you can't find on our main website you just need to contact us.

We will follow in future posts details of other companies that rebrand, we want you the consumer to be able to easily compare and make informed decisions.

Of course any purchase is never 'just about the price', regardless of what type of product you buy. Hearing aids in particular are a product that may need ongoing aftercare because of the very nature of them, you need to feel comfortable that you are dealing with a reputable organisation that will look after your interests in the long term.

At Digital Hearing Care we pride ourselves on the three pillars that support the company and have over the years made it the leading independent hearing aid supplier in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Manchester - Price, Choice and Aftercare. (The best combination of low prices, the widest choice you only get from an independent supplier of hearing aids, and fantastic aftercare you just don't seem to get with the biggest national companies).

Deaf Awareness Week runs this year 2010 from 28th June to 4th July. The aim of Deaf Awareness Week is to increase understanding of the different ways the deaf and hard of hearing public communicate with each other and those who can hear.

The UK Council on Deafness (UKCoD) is an umbrella body of  all the voluntary organisations working for the deaf and hard of hearing and is coordinating events through the week. This year there are over one hundred charities involved in promoting and supporting the week.

A spokesperson for UKCoD said 'We're really pleased to be bringing together the all-inclusive Deaf Awareness Week campaign promoting positive aspects of deafness, social inclusion and raising awareness of the huge range of local and national organisations which support deaf people and their family and friends.'

Starkey Hearing Aids have recently launched an upgrade on the Starkey 'S' Series, the Starkey 'S' Series IQ range of hearing aids. The upgraded hearing aid range promises interesting new features, including Voice IQ, Invision Directionality and Audioscape.
Voice IQ - Hearing comfortably in noise is one of the biggest problems for people who wear hearing aids. Voice iQ is designed to solve the problem by holding speech volume up while pushing background noise down.

Invision Directionality -  Improves signal to noise ratio by 5-6 dB, dynamically switches between omni and directional and prioritises speech understanding when you need it most.

Audioscape - Adapts the hearing aid to any environment by automatically switching to the settings you prefer.

This along with all the features already available in the Starkey 'S' Series make it a great hearing aid to consider.

Fiction - Wearing hearing aids is a sign of old age.

Fact - Pretending you don’t have hearing loss is more noticeable!

Always saying ‘sorry’, ‘pardon’ and ‘excuse me’ are less than subtle signs that you may have a hearing problem. Other indicators are that you are turning the TV too loud, avoiding telephone conversations and going in to social gatherings.

Hearing difficulties can affect your family, friends and quality of life more than you think.

Today’s tiny sophisticated hearing aid technology is certainly less noticeable than pretending there isn’t a problem.

Don’t let a hearing loss make you seem older than you really are.

Oticon Hearing Aids have just launched a new line of connectivity options to work with their very successful Oticon Streamer accessory, Oticon Connectline, specifically to help with watching television and having conversations on the telephone or mobile phone.

There are a couple of interesting features to note. One is that the Oticon Streamer, after a firmware update if you previously bought one in the past, can connect to up to 4 devices at the same time, also with an autoconnect.

Here is how it would work in practice; You have your Oticon Streamer connected to your television via the Oticon Connectline TV Adapter, you have your landline telephone connected to your Oticon Streamer via the Oticon Connectline Telephone Adapter, your mobile phone and your bluetooth MP3 player are connected directly to your Oticon Streamer as they emit a bluetooth signal.

You are watching your television with sound input directly into your hearing aids, the mobile or landline telephone rings. You hear the ringtone directly in your hearing aids and your Oticon Streamer starts flashing.  You press the button, the television mutes and you have your telephone conversation. You hang up by pressing the button and the TV reconnects automatically. You pop out to the shops and your Oticon Streamer disconnects from the devices as they are out of range. You arrive back at home and all the devices you have connected to your Oticon steamer reconnect automatically. Cool!

The accessories are priced reasonably, the beauty is you don’t have to bother with any of the accessories if you don’t feel the need at the time, they can be added later if you have a change of heart.

Sometimes some of the manufacturers could be accused of releasing new technology just for the sake of offering new product, we think these new hearing aid accessories are well worth considering, a nice smart easy solution that is well thought out.

Widex, the well renowned Danish manufacturer of high quality digital hearing aids is to manufacture and supply directly to the UK market as from 1st July 2010.

For the last 40 odd years Widex hearing aids have been supplied under licence in the UK by PC Werth of London, changes in market forces have made this arrangement more difficult both for PC Werth and Widex corporate so the decision was made for Widex to deal directly with the UK market as of the above date.

From the end users point of view there should be no discernable change apart from head office for Widex in the UK being in Chester as opposed to London.

A more streamlined product range is promised at the same time as the launch of Widex UK, watch this space for further developments!

A perennial problem with ‘in the ear’ hearing aids is ingress of wax, skin flakes and other debris found in the average ear canal. This can have a detrimental effect on the performance of your expensively purchased hearing aids ranging from slight dullness to fully blown wooliness to no sound output at all.

Over the years the manufacturers have used various methods to overcome this ongoing problem, ranging from extended receiver tubes to brass springs in the receiver tube (sound outlet) and so on. These have limited success.

Hearing aids that ‘break down’ are a problem for all parties, the manufacturers, the hearing aid audiologist and most of all the client themselves. In the last few years three of the main manufacturers have brought to the market their own wax prevention methods, some would call them wax guards or wax traps.

The first waxguard of note is from Widex and is called the Cerustop. Basically it’s a very small basket with a fine filter that stops virtually any debris working it’s way into the hearing aid and impairing its function. It has the benefit of being very small so fits on hearing aids for even the narrowest ear canals. It is fitted mainly to Widex, Phonak and Unitron hearing aids.

It’s best point is also sometimes its drawback, sometimes it blocks up a little too easily but is very easy for the client to change, even with limited dexterity. A recent development is that the Cerustop has been superceded by the NanoCare Cerustop, which has nano-coating to repel moisture, a real benefit for some clients.

The second example is the Oticon NoWax system. It works in a similar way to the Widex Cerustop but the Oticon NoWax is larger with a larger grill to stop debris ingressing down the receiver tube. It is easier to clean rather than replace.

It blocks up less easily because the filter is not so fine but sometimes will let debris fall through to the receiver. Again a very credible wax guard. The Oticon NoWax is fitted mainly to Oticon and Bernafon hearing aids and was also fitted widely to Sonic Innovations hearing aids before they withdrew from the UK market a couple of years ago.

The Phonak SmartGuard is the third wax guard - the Phonak SmartGuard has a moisture proof barrier particularly good for clients with damp ear canals. The Phonak SmartGuard can’t be fitted to clients with narrow ear canals because of it’s size, but with the right client can be a very credible method of prevention. The Phonak SmartGuard is also a little more expensive to buy. SmartGuard is fitted on Phonak hearing aids.

With the advent of better waxguards hearing aid users can look forward to increased reliablity and less ‘down-time’ because the newer wax traps are easy for anyone, even with limited dexterity to change in a few seconds.

For the majority of our clients the vexing problem of ongoing moisture problems and how it affects their hearing aids isn’t an issue, if it does affect you it can be a real pain! The build up of moisture in hearing aids causes all sorts of short and long term problems that lead to poor performing hearing aids, breakdown of your hearing aids and ultimately shortening the life of your hearing aids.

Some clients perspire a lot in the ear canal, others with the lifestyle they lead or the sports they play etc. will have this problem that can generally be overcome with a bit of patience and the right equipment.

The first port of call in overcoming an ongoing moisture problem is a dry tub. At Digital Hearing Care we use the Oticon Drying Pot and drying tablets. The tablets work in a similar way to the sachets you find when you buy a suitcase, a silica gel packet that draws moisture from the surroundings.
You place your hearing aids in the airtight tub with a drying tablet overnight and moisture in your hearing aids is drawn out while your hearing aids are resting. Best thing to do is remove your hearing aid batteries and leave everything as open as you can.

If this method fails we move on to plan B, The Cedis Drying Case, an electrical dehumidifier that dries out the moisture from your hearing aids in a pre-determined period of time overnight.
It’s a little more expensive but experience has shown that if we go through the process step by step one way or the other we obtain a satisfactory result, hearing aids that are more reliable and longer lasting!

Disaster strikes - you are out walking in the rain and your hearing aids suddenly stop working. You jump into the shower and too late realise you are still wearing your hearing aids. You go to the hairdressers and start to have your hair washed, suddenly realising your hearing aids are still in your ear.

The result? Hearing aids on the blink!

Worry not, if you are lucky and the hearing aids don’t get too wet they may well rejuvenate themselves within a short period of time, just allow them to dry out slowly.

The best advice we can give at Digital Hearing Care is to open the battery trays, throw away the hearing aid batteries and leave the hearing aids  in a warm dry place for a while. Keep trying the hearing aids to see if they have any output, maybe every few hours. It might take a day or two before they spring back to life.

If your hearing aids are not working at this point it might be best to give us a call, cavalry to the rescue!

It’s a funny thing, for the last year our customers (and potential customers) keep asking me the same question, ‘How is the credit crunch affecting business?’

All I can say is that for us at Digital Hearing Care we really have not noticed a downturn in the amount of hearing aids we are supplying, in fact the opposite seems to be happening, our turnover year on year is up by around 50%.

We are covering a really diverse area, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Manchester, with a real mix of urban and rural population. We have always concentrated on providing great aftercare as well as offering low prices and, being independent, offering a far wider range of hearing aids than most of the competition.

The key to our increasing level of hearing aids supplied lies in my opinion in good old fashioned customer care and attention to detail. We have been trading for quite a few years now and never become complacent. The people that already deal with us seem in the main to want to stay with us and we regularly receive recommendations from satisfied customers.

I think one of the reasons our business is increasing in tough trading conditions when the majority of our competition is struggling is because the current economic climate makes people more wary of spending their hard earned money, people want to know that they will receive good value for money.

People are definitely shopping around a lot more, that can only be good for the consumer, and it helps a company like Digital Hearing Care to prosper as we offer some of the lowest prices around. People are doing more research on the internet and are becoming more brand aware, we regularly have customers asking us for specific models of hearing aids which did not seem to happen much in the past. That makes conditions favourable for us as independent hearing aid audiologists as we can offer the full range of hearing aids available in the UK where the national companies as a general rule do not.

All this along with our great aftercare service has meant that, against the trend, Digital Hearing Care are growing to be one of the the main independent suppliers of quality digital hearing aids in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Manchester.

We will always do our utmost to ensure we supply hearing aids with competitive pricing and once you’re a customer we’ll do everything we can to make sure you stay satisfied.

The aim of the website is to provide and easy to use and secure, low cost one stop shop for hearing aid batteries and accessories. We’ve concentrated on supplying only quality hearing aid batteries, Rayovac Extra and Duracell Activair.

There are websites out there charging less for hearing aid batteries, but they tend to be supplying ‘own label’ cheaper lower quality batteries or selling at a loss to generate names and addresses for future mailing campaigns. (Read masses of junk mail and recurring phone calls). We DON'T do that!

We are also supplying a good range of waxtraps, domes for RIC products, bluetooth accessories and remote controls, and many more items.

With very little fanfare Siemens have launched two variants on their successful Nitro CIC product, the Siemens Nitro Super Power BTE 300 and 700. Aimed at the severe / profound hearing loss these new products offer great performance with all the technology associated with the rest of the range of Siemens hearing aids.

The Siemens Nitro 700 SP in particular, compared to say the Siemens Motion 700, has all the same features, the only thing that seems to be missing is the rechargeable factor. Not such a big deal really to miss that feature, this new range incorporates the very latest and excellent feedback manager that will be filtering through to the rest of the range upgrading in June.

Both variants of the Siemens Nitro SP are TEK compatible so the rather elegant bluetooth solution offered by Siemens is now vailable in a Super Power BTE, no compromises as we have often seen in the past with this segment of the hearing aid market!

For anyone working in a noisy environment over the last 30 years or so, you’ll have noticed big changes in Health and Safety rules to protect your hearing. The rules are quite stringent now and as a general rule companies are keen to keep within the rules. But what about the noise produced while listening to music?

There have been lots of articles in the press  about the potential damage to hearing from MP3 players, also the sound levels at some rock concerts are at increasingly damaging levels. We are seeing more people at a younger age for noise induced hearing loss than ever before. The alarming thing is that, because the damage sometimes takes years to manifest itself, irreparable damage can occur before you know it has happened.

    Here’s a list of typical decibel levels;

    30 = Whispered Conversation
    60-70 = Normal Conversation Levels
    94 = MP3 Player on Medium Setting
    100 = Motorcycle
120 = Formula One Racing Car
    125 = Pneumatic Drill
130 = Passenger Jet Taking Off
170 = Shotgun Going Off Beside Your Ears
194 = Theoretically the Loudest Sound Possible

If you are exposed to excessive noise, a good indication damage is occuring is if you then suffer from a temporary slight deafness and / or a ringing in the ears it will probably be doing your hearing no good at all. Some people seem pre-disposed to their hearing being easily damaged by noise, whilst in others their hearing seems more hardy. However, hearing loss can have a very serious impact on your lifestyle and communications with friends and family, it’s not worth taking a chance  with your hearing. The best advice is always, if in doubt, remove yourself from noisy environments where you can, or wear adequate ear protection where you can’t.

We can, of course, assess your hearing levels if you are worried they may be reduced due to exposure to excessive noise or any other factors.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting information explaining the technology in hearing aids and how it can help you hear better.

One development in hearing aid technology is Adaptive Directional Microphones. Most older hearing aids have a single omnidirectional microphone which amplifies sounds equally from all directions. In contrast, twin adaptive directional microphones try to automatically amplify front facing sounds more prominently and reduce the amplification of sounds emanating from the side and rear when background noise is present. This can help you to hear speech more easily when in noisy situations, a problem that is regularly an issue for the hard of hearing.
Adaptive directional microphones work best when speech is to the front and noise is to the side and rear, also the effectiveness is reduced the more distant the speaker is from the hearing aid user.

The majority of newly supplied hearing aids now have this feature excepting CIC (completely in canal) hearing aids where there is limited space for the microphones.

Directional Microphones have become a ‘must have’ feature in hearing aids, they can’t overcome all speech in noise problems by themselves but are a valuable part of the process of improving speech intelligibility in noise.

Currently in the UK there are approximately 9 million people suffering hearing loss to one degree or another, a quite staggering percentage of the population. Scientists in California have been developing stem cells to try to regenerate the hair cells deep inside the hearing nerve destroyed by hearing loss. Once these hair cells are damaged they cannot be repaired. The experiment with two types of stem cell raises the possibility of treating many types of hearing loss.

So far the success has been only with the hearing cells of mice but scientists are hoping to transform human cells. They have used two types of master cells to create the mouse hair cells — embryonic stem cells and a similar type of cells called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, which are ordinary cells reprogrammed to act like stem cells.

Dr. Kazuo Oshima of Stanford University in California and his team believe re-growing these cells could serve several purposes. “What we are thinking is to get human iPS cells from hearing loss patients and just try to re-make the disorder in the petri dish”, Dr. Oshima said.

“This could be used to screen drugs that might cause the cells to regenerate, or to activate hibernating stem cells in the ear. It may also be possible to grow the cells and inject them into the ear, but no one has developed a technique for doing this” Dr. Oshima said. “There are still so many hurdles to overcome”.

“This gives us real hope that there might be some kind of therapy for regenerating hair cells,” said David Corey, a professor of neurobiology at Harvard University in Massachusetts who was not involved in the study. “It could take a decade or more, but it’s a possibility.”

In the meantime, of course we can rely on hearing aid technology to help with hearing loss and wait for the scientists to experiment further….

The RNID has launched an interesting new app for the iPhone to check your hearing. I’ve downloaded it myself and I have to say I was pretty impressed.

I have tried other online hearing tests, notably one from an online retailer who is pretty prominent on the internet, quite agressively marketing themselves as slashing the cost of hearing aids by up to a tenth of the cost on the high street. Their test advised myself and three other family members and friends, all with good hearing, that we would benefit from their products and to go ahead and order!

I was not impressed and did not expect much from the RNID offering, however it gave the right result in two hearing checks on the iPhone app, a bit more accuracy than the previous experience.

Actually the RNID have a point of view about online hearing tests and hearing checks etc. The  RNID argues that online hearing tests should only be the first step to assessing whether hearing loss is present and hearing aids should be custom fitted. The RNID’s Policy and Research Director says ‘We believe an online hearing test can only indicate a hearing problem. You need to tailor each hearing aid to the precise hearing loss.’

    Here is what the RNID say about their new iPhone Hearing Check App;
The app is the latest version of RNID’s popular Hearing Check that has seen over half a million people check their hearing so far. The Hearing Check app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch will allow users to check their hearing at the touch of a button for free. It is hoped that this scientifically verified check will encourage the 40 million iPhone users worldwide to check their hearing.

RNID’s Chief Executive, Jackie Ballard, said: “This is a fantastic new way to encourage people to value their hearing and check it regularly. The Hearing Check application offers quick results and confidential advice from anywhere with a decent phone signal!”

RNID’s Hearing Check application measures a person’s ability to hear someone speaking when there is background noise, similar to being in a crowded room. The app is free to download and is a convenient way for people to check their hearing is within the normal range.

We would encourage you to try the app if you own an iPhone, or maybe try the online test on the RNID website if you have not already had a hearing test, it may well confirm your hearing is fine.

Oticon Agil Pro is the latest premium hearing aid offering from Oticon Hearing Aids. Digital Hearing Care along with a selected number of suppliers in the UK have just attended launch of this groundbreaking product.
The Oticon Agil range of hearing aids are a direct replacement for the successful Oticon Epoq range and is based on the RISE 2 chip. Oticon have managed a two fold increase in the speed of the chip over its predecessor the original RISE chip. Bullet points in the new offering from Oticon include a new, improved Spatial Sound 2.0 and a new feature called Speech Guard that is designed to protect the integrity of speech cues particularly in noise and help to lock on to a speakers voice whilst reducing competing noise.

Oticon Agil is also now available as a mini RITE, also standard, medium and power speaker wires are now available for this product.
Also launched are power CIC versions of the Oticon Agil, Vigo and Hit, a welcome addition to the Oticon range.
Initial feedback from test users are that particularly in noise the Oticon Agil sounds great, very natural and because of the Speech Guard feature in particular noisy environments seem to be less ‘cluttered’, perhaps easier on the ear!

Siemens Hearing Aids are launching a new generation of Pure, Life and Motion hearing instruments which are equipped with the new and innovative features of BestSound Technology to provide the best listening environment for all. These new products are available in the UK from 10th June 2010.

For Better Hearing - Speechfocus is the key feature in BestSound Technology that enhances traditional directional microphones. It continuously scans sounds in the listening environment for speech patterns. When speech is detected it selects the directivity pattern most effective in focusing on that speech source, even if the speech is coming from behind the wearer. Plus, it does this all automatically in the universal program.

For Increased Sound Comfort - Siemens’ powerful FeedBackStopper is an adaptive phase cancellation system combined with Transient Frequency Shift. This means it is able to cut off feedback (or whistling) before the wearer hears it. Plus there are no artefacts. Most importantly feedback is suppressed without reducing gain for external signals like speech, music and environmental sounds.

For Individuality - In SoundLearning 2.0 every time the user changes volume or treble this adjustment is recorded along with the current input level and detected acoustic environment. This leads to a dedicated frequency response as well as compression setting for speech, noise and music. These learned new settings are then selected when the system detects these situations again. All of this happens automatically in the universal program.

Siemens BestSound technology will be available in the UK from 10th June 2010.

I've just nicely got back from the latest Starkey Hearing Aid Launch and one of the hearing aids I have learned about is the new Starkey OtoLens IIC (Invisible in Canal) hearing aid.
There are a couple of deep insertion CIC hearing aids on the market at present with generic fittings. The Lyric and the ExSilent. The Starkey OtoLens is different in a number of respects; basically the faceplate of the OtoLens starts pretty much where most CIC hearing aids finish, at the second bend of the ear canal. This makes it pretty much invisible to the eye. It is moulded to the exact shape of the client's ear canal to obtain a comfortable fit and is designed to be removed at the end of each day. The Starkey Otolens is a premium product, it contains the latest top of the range technology available from Starkey hearing aids, the 'S' Series iQ 11.

Look for the next post to find out about the whole range of Starkey 'S' Series IQ hearing aids recently launched.
Starkey Hearing Aids estimate  that around 60% of ear canals will take a Starkey OtoLens, it may be less than that. Contraindications are canal ear dimension, level of hearing loss, dexterity issues, perforation of the eardrum, osteatomas, extosis, agressive blood thinning regimen etc etc.
However where appropriate this type of instrument cannot be beaten for cosmetics.
